Anna Maria Luisa fu l'ultima superstite del ramo granducale della dinastia medicea. A lei spettò l'ingrato compito di traghettare il granducato di Toscana dal dominio mediceo a quello lorenese. Nel 1737 questa donna si trovò a dover decidere le sorti di un patrimonio sconfinato, un'eredità fatta di opere d'arte, pitture, sculture, gioielli, biblioteche delle quali avrebbe potuto disporre liberamente. L'Elettrice Palatina - titolo acquisito dal marito e col quale ci si riferiva alla Medici - decise di rinunciare a tutto in favore del nuovo granduca e della sua successione ma ad una condizione: che nulla potesse essere spostato da Firenze e dalla Toscana. Nasceva così la prima forma di tutela del patrimonio, formalizzata dall'Elettrice in un famoso contratto chiamato "Patto di Famiglia". Questo inestimabile documento rende Firenze, ancora oggi, uno dei luoghi con la maggior densità di opere d'arte al mondo, in grado di attirare la curiosità di milioni di turisti ogni anno. Il prezioso documento, oggi di proprietà dello Stato Italiano, è conservato presso l'Archivio di Stato di Firenze ma, per concessione straordinaria, è stato esposto al pubblico per la prima volta nella storia presso il nostro Museo de' Medici dal 18 febbraio al 18 aprile 2024.
Anna Maria Luisa was the last survivor of the grand ducal branch of the Medici dynasty. She had the thankless task of ferrying the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from the Medici dominion to that of the Lorraine. In 1737, this woman found herself having to decide the fate of a boundless patrimony, an inheritance made up of works of art, paintings, sculptures, jewels, libraries of which she could have freely disposed. The Electress Palatine - a title acquired by her husband and with which the Medici were referred to - decided to renounce everything in favor of the new Grand Duke and his succession but on one condition: that nothing could be moved from Florence and Tuscany. Thus was born the first form of protection of the patrimony, formalized by the Electress in a famous contract called the "Family Pact". This invaluable document makes Florence, even today, one of the places with the greatest density of works of art in the world, capable of attracting the curiosity of millions of tourists every year. The precious document, now owned by the Italian State, is preserved at the State Archives of Florence but, by extraordinary concession, has been exhibited to the public for the first time in history at our Museo de' Medici from 18 February to 18 April 2024.

Che cos'è il Patto di Famiglia?
Si tratta di una convenzione elaborata da Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici - ultima discendente del ramo granducale della dinastia - grazie alla quale le opere d'arte raccolte dai Medici venivano consegnate al nuovo granduca Francesco Stefano di Lorena e alla sua discendenza «a condizione espressa che di quello che è per ornamento dello Stato, per utilità del pubblico e per attirare la curiosità dei Forestieri, non ne sarà nulla trasportato e levato fuori dalla Capitale e dello Stato del Gran Ducato». A lei dunque dobbiamo che Firenze abbia conservato, pressoché immutata, la gran parte del proprio patrimonio artistico, storico e culturale. Che fine ha fatto il Patto originale? Il documento fu siglato dai rispettivi ambasciatori a Vienna il 31 ottobre 1737 in doppia copia, una in italiano per la Medici e l'altra in francese per il Lorena. La copia originale appartenuta all'Elettrice Palatina è oggi proprietà dello Stato Italiano e viene conservata presso l'Archivio di Stato di Firenze. Dove e quando è possibile vederlo? Il Patto rappresenta la prima forma di tutela del patrimonio della storia ed è considerato un trattato internazionale mai abrogato e quindi, teoricamente, tuttora in vigore. Il Museo de' Medici ha ottenuto l'autorizzazione ministeriale per esporlo al pubblico per la prima volta nella storia nel 2024 poi, per motivi di conservazione, il delicato documento è tornato nell'archivio ma vi invitiamo a seguire i nostri canali social per scoprire tutte le prossime occasioni di esposizione. What is the Family Pact?
It is a convention drawn up by Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici - the last descendant of the grand ducal branch of the dynasty - thanks to which the works of art collected by the Medici were delivered to the new Grand Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine and his descendants "on the express condition that nothing that is for the ornament of the State, for the utility of the public and to attract the curiosity of foreigners, will be transported or removed outside the Capital and the State of the Grand Duchy". We therefore owe to her that Florence has preserved, almost unchanged, the majority of its artistic, historical and cultural heritage. What happened to the original Pact? The document was signed by the respective ambassadors in Vienna on 31 October 1737 in double copy, one in Italian for the Medici and the other in French for the Lorraine. The original copy that belonged to the Electress Palatine is now the property of the Italian State and is kept at the State Archives of Florence. Where and when can it be seen? The Pact represents the first form of protection of the heritage of history and is considered an international treaty that has never been repealed and therefore, theoretically, still in force. The Museo de' Medici obtained ministerial authorization to exhibit it to the public for the first time in history in 2024 then, for conservation reasons, the delicate document returned to the archive but we invite you to follow our social channels to discover all the upcoming exhibition opportunities. Il Patto di Famiglia è il più importante lascito dei Medici all'Umanità ma, fino a poco tempo fa, potevano vederlo soltanto pochi studiosi. Grazie ad un accordo col Ministero della Cultura, il Museo de' Medici ha ottenuto l'incarico di digitalizzare lo straordinario documento, rendendolo facilmente consultabile a tutti in tutto il mondo, grazie anche ad una pubblicazione anastatica a cura del direttore Samuele Lastrucci, realizzata in collaborazione con l'Archivio di Stato di Firenze e la Regione Toscana.

The Family Pact is the most important legacy of the Medici to Humanity, but until recently only a few scholars could see it. Thanks to an agreement with the Ministry of Culture, the Museo de' Medici has been given the task of digitizing the extraordinary document, making it easily accessible to everyone throughout the world, thanks also to an anastatic publication edited by the director Samuele Lastrucci, created in collaboration with the State Archives of Florence and the Tuscany Region.
